Iran has halted passage to all ships trying to pass through the Strait of Hormuz as they prepare for a possible ground assault from U.S. troops that have been deployed to the region this week.

In this interview with independent journalist Pepe Escobar, he reveals how Iran’s Parliament is now passing laws requiring any ships who pass through the Strait of Hormuz to now pay a toll of up to $2 million, but payable in Chinese Yuan.

President Trump has allegedly delayed any attacks on Iran’s energy and infrastructure, but Israel has reportedly just bombed an Iranian steel manufacturer, and as a result, Iran has issued urgent evacuation warnings for major steel facilities across the region, declaring them imminent military targets.

Iran has also promised to target energy producing facilities in the UAE if they join the war.

Russia’s oil exporters are warning buyers that cargoes from its key Baltic ports may not be delivered at all.

Russian producers are now saying they may declare force majeure on cargoes from key Baltic Sea ports after a sustained wave of Ukrainian drone strikes knocked out critical infrastructure this week.

The epicenter is Ust-Luga, one of Russia’s most important export terminals, where oil loadings have been halted since Wednesday following repeated strikes from Ukraine and a fire that, as of Friday, was still burning. Industry sources told Reuters that shipments may not resume until mid-April.

Nearby Primorsk—another backbone of Russia’s Baltic export system—has fared only marginally better. It sustained damage but has partially resumed loadings. Even so, partial is doing a lot of work here. Together, the two ports represent a massive share of Russia’s seaborne crude and product flows.

Reuters calculations suggest up to 40% of Russia’s oil export capacity is currently offline when factoring in port outages, pipeline disruptions, and tanker seizures.

Ukraine seems to be targeting Russia’s export capacity. President Volodymyr Zelenskiy has signaled that long-range strikes are designed to sustain pressure precisely as sanctions enforcement loosens and Russian barrels make their way back into global markets.

Russia can attempt to reroute flows through alternative outlets, including Black Sea ports or inland networks. But capacity is finite, and those routes are already under strain.

The potential force majeure announcement comes at a time when the oil market is already under strain. The effective closure of the Strait of Hormuz has already taken a significant chunk of oil and LNG supply off the market. Now layer in Russian export outages, and the result is a system with very little slack.

This has led Kremlin envoy Kirill Dmitriev to state that “the most powerful energy crisis in human history is looming”.

The world is heading toward the most severe energy crisis in history and Europe is unprepared, Kremlin envoy Kirill Dmitriev has said. The warning comes as the escalating conflict in the Middle East has driven volatility in global energy markets.

Speaking on Thursday, Dmitriev – who heads the Russian Direct Investment Fund (RDIF) and is President Vladimir Putin’s special envoy for investment and economic cooperation – said he earlier predicted that oil would exceed $100 a barrel if a conflict like this broke out.

“Back then, no one believed,” he said, adding that some market participants are now discussing the possibility of prices rising to $150 or even $200.

“We see that the most severe energy crisis in the history of mankind is approaching. Neither the EU nor the UK is at all prepared for it,” Dmitriev said on the sidelines of the RDIF congress.

Brussels and London “shot themselves in the foot” by rejecting Russian oil and gas, and the consequences of this are only beginning to emerge, he added.

Dmitriev warned that the EU faces deindustrialization, and that “big problems” await the UK, arguing that this the result of choices made by European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and other “Russophobic politicians.”

Some Wall Street investors appear to be finally starting to wake up and realize Trump has been lying to them, as one analyst contradicted Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent’s statements that fuel shortages were not coming to the U.S.

The JPMorgan commodities analyst who previously was criticized by Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent over her analysis of the impact of the Iran war now is forecasting global shortages, possibly in California.

This would appear to contradict directly the statements made during a cabinet meeting held Thursday in which Bessent said “the U.S. oil market is well-supplied.”

The head of JPMorgan’s global commodities strategy team, Natasha Kaneva, was on the receiving end of harsh words from Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent earlier this month when she questioned the feasibility of insuring oil tankers seeking safe transit through the Strait of Hormuz.

The scenarios she now projects are alarming for traders, economists and consumers alike.

Of particular concern may be Kaneva’s observation that California is particularly vulnerable as the most exposed region in the U.S. The state is structurally isolated from the broader U.S. system and heavily dependent on imports from Latin America, Canada, Asia and the Middle East.

“As a result, the U.S. will initially experience a price shock, but for the West Coast, this is likely to evolve into a physical supply challenge by late April and May, as replacement options dwindle and competition for suitable crude intensifies,” she said.

Kaneva and the report’s fellow authors, Artem Fakhretdinov and Lyuba Savinova, begin with the following prediction:

“Much like during the pandemic, the shock unfolds sequentially rather than simultaneously — a rolling supply disruption moving westward, dictated by shipping times and buffered unevenly by regional inventories.”

DF ‘on verge of collapse’: Opposition leader, military chief

Commenting on the troop shortage in a televised briefing Thursday, military spokesman Brigadier General Effie Defrin said that “more combat soldiers are needed” on a range of fronts, notably in Lebanon.

“On the Lebanese front, the forward defensive zone that we are creating requires additional IDF forces,”

Defrin said, also mentioning increased needs in the occupied West Bank, Gaza and Syria.

Lapid said that Zamir told the cabinet that he had reservists doing sixth and seventh rotations.

“These reservists are worn out and exhausted and can no longer meet our security challenges,” Lapid said.

“The army does not have enough soldiers for its missions.”
