The Scriptures Will Not Save Evangelical Zionist Christians

You diligently study the Scriptures because you think that by them you possess eternal life. These are the Scriptures that testify about me, yet you refuse to come to me to have life. (John 5:39-40)

by Brian Shilhavy

In the fifth chapter of John’s Gospel in the New Testament portion of the Bible, we have the very remarkable statements from Jesus about the “Scriptures”, which at that point in history were what we call the “Old Testament” portion of the Bible today, and included the writings of Moses, and the Prophets.

He told the Jews of his day who did not believe that he was the Messiah, that the Scriptures could not save them, even though they saw themselves as the “chosen people” based on their belief that just being part of Abraham’s lineage saved them, as long as they followed the writings of Moses.

This event happened after Jesus healed a crippled man on a Sabbath, which they claimed was against the law, and after Jesus stated that he was the “Son of God.”

You diligently study the Scriptures because you think that by them you possess eternal life. These are the Scriptures that testify about me, yet you refuse to come to me to have life.

I do not accept praise from men, but I know you. I know that you do not have the love of God in your hearts.

I have come in my Father’s name, and you do not accept me; but if someone else comes in his own name, you will accept him.

How can you believe if you accept praise from one another, yet make no effort to obtain the praise that comes from the only God?

But do not think I will accuse you before the Father. Your accuser is Moses, on whom your hopes are set.

If you believed Moses, you would believe me, for he wrote about me. But since you do not believe what he wrote, how are you going to believe what I say?” (John 5:39-47)

As we can see from the words of Jesus in this chapter of John, just knowing the Scriptures is not enough to attain to eternal life in the Kingdom of God. Jesus knew that the Jews who were trying to kill him did not have “the love of God” in their hearts.

They were trying to weaponize the Old Testament Scriptures against him for supposedly breaking the Sabbath and healing a crippled man.

Jesus said it was their belief in the Scriptures that would actually condemn them, because they did not accept Jesus as the Jewish Messiah.

The New Covenant Scriptures

Therefore, if the Jews during the Old Covenant were not saved by the Scriptures, because their hearts were not right with God, how much more is this true today, under the New Covenant that Jesus started with his blood sacrifice on the cross, and subsequent rising from the dead, if we don’t have “the love of God” in our hearts?

This question is actually answered for us in the New Testament book of Hebrews:

Therefore, holy brothers, who share in the heavenly calling, fix your thoughts on Jesus, the apostle and high priest whom we confess.

He was faithful to the one who appointed him, just as Moses was faithful in all God’s house.

Jesus has been found worthy of greater honor than Moses, just as the builder of a house has greater honor than the house itself. For every house is built by someone, but God is the builder of everything.

Moses was faithful as a servant in all God’s house, testifying to what would be said in the future. But Christ is faithful as a son over God’s house.

And we are his house, if we hold on to our courage and the hope of which we boast. So, as the Holy Spirit says:

“Today, if you hear his voice, do not harden your hearts as you did in the rebellion, during the time of testing in the desert, where your fathers tested and tried me and for forty years saw what I did.

That is why I was angry with that generation, and I said, ‘Their hearts are always going astray, and they have not known my ways.’ So I declared on oath in my anger, “They shall never enter my rest.'”

See to it, brothers, that none of you has a sinful, unbelieving heart that turns away from the living God. But encourage one another daily, as long as it is called Today, so that none of you may be hardened by sin’s deceitfulness.

We have come to share in Christ if we hold firmly till the end the confidence we had at first.

As has just been said:

“Today, if you hear his voice, do not harden your hearts as you did in the rebellion.”

Who were they who heard and rebelled? Were they not all those Moses led out of Egypt? And with whom was he angry for forty years? Was it not with those who sinned, whose bodies fell in the desert? And to whom did God swear that they would never enter his rest if not to those who disobeyed?

So we see that they were not able to enter, because of their unbelief. (Hebrews 3:1-19)

And then here is the solemn warning written to New Testament believers at the end of Hebrews:

But you have come to Mount Zion, to the heavenly Jerusalem, the city of the living God. You have come to thousands upon thousands of angels in joyful assembly, to the assembly of the firstborn, whose names are written in heaven.

You have come to God, the judge of all men, to the spirits of righteous men made perfect, to Jesus the mediator of a new covenant, and to the sprinkled blood that speaks a better word than the blood of Abel.

See to it that you do not refuse him who speaks. If they did not escape when they refused him who warned them on earth, how much less will we, if we turn away from him who warns us from heaven?

At that time his voice shook the earth, but now he has promised,

Once more I will shake not only the earth but also the heavens.”

The words “once more” indicate the removing of what can be shaken—that is, created things—so that what cannot be shaken may remain.

Therefore, since we are receiving a kingdom that cannot be shaken, let us be thankful, and so worship God acceptably with reverence and awe, for our “God is a consuming fire.” (Hebrews 12:22-29)

As is clearly written here, “Mt. Zion” and “Jerusalem” today are not on earth, but in heaven.

As the Temple and Jerusalem were destroyed by the Romans in AD 70, so too the next event is going to be the destruction of the entire earth and heavens, the remaining created things.

The Zionists today will not be saved by their belief in the Scriptures, if they don’t have the love of God in their hearts, as Jesus clearly stated that the world would know who his true disciples were based on their love for others, which shows the true condition of their hearts.

A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another. By this all men will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another.” (John 13:34-35)

As I frequently warn now, it is time to get out of the Zionist churches.

I came across a song written by a Pastor who used to be an Evangelical Christian. He is a worship pastor in South Bend, Indiana, and he is getting attention for a song he wrote “calling out” evangelical supporters of President Trump.

Daniel Deitrich, the pastor for arts and worship at South Bend City Church, wrote “Hymn for the 81%,” a reference to white evangelical Christian voters who helped secure Trump’s victory 2016, as “a plea…to come home to the way [2] of Jesus.”

Here is a live 2024 version [3] where he adds a new verse:

“maybe I was too naive
or I just didn’t want to see
that there’s always been a little poison in the well”

As a former Evangelical Christian myself, I echo what this man is singing:

It’s time to come home to Jesus, while you still can.
