Now we know that if the earthly tent we live in is destroyed, we have a building from God, an eternal house in heaven, not built by human hands. (2 Corinthians 5:1)
by Brian Shilhavy
In the English translations of the Bible, starting with the earliest translations that went into the government “authorized” English version in 1611 by James Charles Stuart, the King of England, and also in all the modern English translations, the English word “house” is frequently used to interpret non-physical “structures” or “dwellings” in the original texts, where the word “house” is probably not the best English word to use, especially in modern Western culture.
The concept of a spiritual, or a non-physical structure or dwelling, is not well understood or visualized by people in modern Western culture. As I have previously written, those of us who grew up in Western culture have been heavily influenced by over 200 years of Darwinian evolutionary teaching that almost completely ignores the spiritual realm, and treats all reality in the universe as if everything is physical.
And this Darwinian belief system has most recently greatly accelerated with the PC Computer age, and most recently, the development of Large Language Models (LLM) Artificial Intelligence (AI).
Therefore, when we use a word like “house” or “tent”, we really only visualize dwelling places made by human hands, as dwelling places “made without human hands” are not something most of us can visualize in our minds, even though they are discussed in the Bible.
One of those places is in the 5th chapter of Paul’s second letter written to the believers in the Greek city of Corinth. He writes:
Now we know that if the earthly tent we live in is destroyed, we have a building from God, an eternal house in heaven, not built by human hands.
Meanwhile we groan, longing to be clothed with our heavenly dwelling, because when we are clothed, we will not be found naked.
For while we are in this tent, we groan and are burdened, because we do not wish to be unclothed but to be clothed with our heavenly dwelling, so that what is mortal may be swallowed up by life.
Now it is God who has made us for this very purpose and has given us the Spirit as a deposit, guaranteeing what is to come.
Therefore we are always confident and know that as long as we are at home in the body we are away from the Lord.
We live by faith, not by sight. (2 Corinthians 5:1-7)
I have put in bold and italics three different English words for “dwelling places” (tent, building, house), with each of the three containing descriptions of these dwellings, to distinguish if these structures are physical, and therefore built by human hands, or spiritual, “not built by human hands.”
The fact that Western culture has a difficult time interpreting these Greek words into anything other than physical dwellings, is seen by the various English translations of these verses.
Remember, the English translations of the Bible, and specifically the New Testament, began in Europe during a time called “The Great Awakening”, or “The Reformation” period, which is the same time that Freemasonry was proliferating in England and throughout Europe.
Darwin’s teachings on biological evolution, for example, were taking over much of academic thought during this same time period.
Therefore, to properly understand how these words were understood by the people this letter was written to, it is very helpful to look up the words used in the original texts, written in Greek.
“House”

When the term “house” (oikos) was used in the Bible, these are the primary images the readers back then would be viewing in their minds of physical houses.
The most common word of the three used here, is “house” – οἶκος (oikos), which is used 114 times in the New Testament. Paul describes the kind of house he is referring to: “an eternal house in heaven, not built by human hands.”
This description separates the word “house” from physical houses built by human hands, which exist on earth.
If you have ever owned a house here on earth for any length of time, you are keenly aware that your physical house is most certainly NOT “eternal”. They wear down over time as they age, needing constant repairs.
The dwellings that do still exist today from ancient times were all mostly created out of stone (masonry), such as the vast stone structures we can still see in places like Rome. Old stone structures also exist throughout the world, and I saw many of them during the years I lived in Turkey, for example.
But even these structures are not “eternal”, as most of them that remain are considered “ruins” today.
I included an image above of what a “house” would have looked like in most Middle Eastern cultures. They were built by “masons” and made mostly of stone, and in the Roman era included advanced skills in creating “concrete”, and most of that (non-electrical) technology is lost to us today. See:

Here are some verses in the New Testament that use oikos for physical structures that were “houses.”
A few days later, when Jesus again entered Capernaum, the people heard that he had come home. So many gathered that there was no room left, not even outside the door, and he preached the word to them. (Mark 2:1-2)
When the day of Pentecost came, they were all together in one place. Suddenly a sound like the blowing of a violent wind came from heaven and filled the whole house where they were sitting. (Acts 2:1-2 – Note: the number of people in this “house” at this event is recorded as being about 120 people – verse 15.)
Other examples are in the New Testament where oikos is used to refer to the Temple in Jerusalem (e.g. “House of the Lord”, and Jesus called it “My father’s house”).
It can also refer to “household” and one’s family ancestry, like “House of David“.
As for a home not made with human hands, Jesus referred to this also:
“Do not let your hearts be troubled. Trust in God; trust also in me.
In my Father’s house are many rooms; if it were not so, I would have told you. I am going there to prepare a place for you.” (John 14:1-2)
This refers to the “heavenly home” made without human hands that Paul referred to in 2 Corinthians 5.
However, there is another kind of “house” here on earth that is not made with human hands where oikos is used, and refers to our human physical bodies, as it is used by Paul in 2 Corinthians.
This is undoubtedly the meaning of “house” used by Jesus as well, in referring to the human body/physical life.
“Therefore everyone who hears these words of mine and puts them into practice is like a wise man who built his house on the rock.
The rain came down, the streams rose, and the winds blew and beat against that house; yet it did not fall, because it had its foundation on the rock.
But everyone who hears these words of mine and does not put them into practice is like a foolish man who built his house on sand.
The rain came down, the streams rose, and the winds blew and beat against that house, and it fell with a great crash.” (Matthew 7:24-27)
“Building”

Model of the second temple in ancient Jerusalem.
The word “building” used in the English translation of 2 Corinthians 5, is actually a cognate (derivative) of oikos: οἰκοδομή (oikodomē).
It is also used in the New Testament of physical “buildings”, built by human hands.
As he was leaving the temple, one of his disciples said to him, “Look, Teacher! What massive stones! What magnificent buildings!”
“Do you see all these great buildings?” replied Jesus.
“Not one stone here will be left on another; every one will be thrown down.” (Mark 13:1-2)
Here are some verses that use oikodomē to refer to buildings not made with human hands:
For we are God’s fellow workers; you are God’s field, God’s building. (1 Corinthians 3:9)
Consequently, you are no longer foreigners and aliens, but fellow citizens with God’s people and members of God’s household, built on the foundation of the apostles and prophets, with Christ Jesus himself as the chief cornerstone.
In him the whole building is joined together and rises to become a holy temple in the Lord. And in him you too are being built (verb form) together to become a dwelling in which God lives by his Spirit. (Ephesians 2:19-22)
The third word that Paul used in 2 Corinthians 5, “tent”, is only used twice in the entire New Testament, with both occurrences happening here in this passage written by Paul.
The Greek word is σκῆνος (skēnos), which means tent, but in the Old Testament Greek translation can also refer to “tabernacle”.
It is a physical dwelling that is not stationary, but carried around place to place while traveling. The tabernacle tent was used by the people of Israel as their place of worship before the Temple was built in Jerusalem.
Paul obviously uses it here to refer to our physical bodies, which were created by God without human hands.
It also refers to the temporary nature of our “homes” here on earth where true believers are described as “foreigners and aliens” or “pilgrims“, because our stay here on earth is temporary, and we do not belong or fit in with the Satanic world system in the physical realm.
Are You Living in a Home “Not Made with Human Hands“?
For those of us who have gone through the Spiritual rebirth, our future home is one that is in Heaven and is built by God for us.
While we live here on the physical earth, in our physical bodies, we are outcasts, aliens, and hated by all in Satan’s physical world system.
This is what Paul wrote about his own life while he walked the earth in the next chapter of 2 Corinthians in chapter 6:
As servants of God we commend ourselves in every way: in great endurance; in troubles, hardships and distresses; in beatings, imprisonments and riots; in hard work, sleepless nights and hunger; in purity, understanding, patience and kindness; in the Holy Spirit and in sincere love; in truthful speech and in the power of God; with weapons of righteousness in the right hand and in the left; through glory and dishonor, bad report and good report; genuine, yet regarded as impostors; known, yet regarded as unknown; dying, and yet we live on; beaten, and yet not killed; sorrowful, yet always rejoicing; poor, yet making many rich; having nothing, and yet possessing everything. (2 Corinthians 6:4-10)
This is the life we live now in the physical world, dwelling in our temporary physical bodies, while members of God’s spiritual house/temple in the spiritual realm.
Modern electronic technology is a false God, and very temporary.
Think of all the $billions that are now being spent on the new AI models, which require massive amounts of electronic power, as they build these huge data centers to “house” all of these computers to run AI.
I still remember the days of my youth, before the computer PC revolution started in the early-to-mid 1980s. I owned one of the first IBM personal computers that did not even have a hard drive, but had two “floppy disk” drives.
People were absolutely amazed and awed at what these personal computers could do, with the IBM PCs and the Apple Macintosh personal computers.
That was just 35 years ago, and now all of that “older” technology is already obsolete and useless. The average life of a modern, “cutting-edge” piece of technology is probably less than 5 years before it becomes obsolete.
What will this world, which we call our “home”, look like in 5-10 years from now, if it lasts that long?
I know that I am not worried about it, because this is not my home anyway, and I am just passing through doing my best to expose the lies of Satan so that at least of few more can be saved from this wicked generation.
By faith Abraham, when called to go to a place he would later receive as his inheritance, obeyed and went, even though he did not know where he was going.
By faith he made his home in the promised land like a stranger in a foreign country; he lived in tents, as did Isaac and Jacob, who were heirs with him of the same promise.
For he was looking forward to the city with foundations, whose architect and builder is God. (NOT made with human hands! – Hebrews 11:8-10)
