As this week saw the end of April and the beginning of the month of May, it was a week full of news in our rapidly changing world.
From the coming retail apocalypse, to President Trump declaring he should be the next Pope, to an explosive new documentary aired on the BBC exposing Zionist Settler attitudes, to Big Tech continuing to inflate the AI bubble, to potential plans for civil war in the U.S., here is a round up of the week’s news from our Telegram Channel [4].
New Documentary Aired on BBC: Louis Theroux – The Settlers
One of our British readers told me about a new BBC documentary by Louis Theroux about Jewish Settlers in Israel.
He was shocked that the BBC would actually air something like this, as it exposes the Zionist prejudices and goals.
These Jewish Settlers, many of whom are American Jews, blatantly disobey the law to forcibly take land away from Palestinians, as the Israeli government allegedly looks the other way.
The film is now available on platforms like Odysee and Rumble. I have created a trailer less than 5 minutes long, an interview with a Settler who was born and raised in Texas.
It is one thing to read about what Zionists believe, but it is another thing altogether to hear from their own mouths, as they use the Bible to justify their lawless actions.
This Texas man is obviously NOT in the homeland of his ancestors, which can be said of most of the other “Jews” who came to the area in 1948.
The Palestinians are the original inhabitants, whether they are Jews, Christians or Muslims today.
Warren Buffett breaks his silence on tariffs: ‘Trade should not be a weapon’
From Quartz [5]:
Excerpts:
The Oracle of Omaha has spoken — and Wall Street is, as usual, all ears. Warren Buffett’s crystal ball shows concerns about global tensions, caution in volatile markets, and confidence in Berkshire Hathaway’s (BRK.A) future under new leadership.
At Berkshire’s Hathaway’s closely watched annual meeting on Saturday, Buffett, now 94, offered his take on the current economic landscape, peppered with his characteristic humor and candor. As always, his words echoed far beyond the convention center in Omaha.
And Buffett also said Saturday that he will step down as head of Berkshire Hathaway at the end of this year, ending a storied investing career that saw him beat the market year after year.
Buffett said he will recommend to the board that Greg Abel, long his heir apparent, take over as CEO. Abel is currently the chairman and CEO of the company’s energy business and the vice chairman of Berkshire’s non-insurance operations.
Trade war and tariffs were the immediate focus.
Buffett, speaking to thousands of attendees at his holding company’s annual meeting, delivered a sharp rebuke of protectionist trade policies as President Donald Trump tries to reshape the global trade order with sweeping tariffs.
“Trade should not be a weapon,” he said.
Buffett, who until now had stayed silent on Trump’s tariffs, added that trade has led to “bad things” in the attitudes it’s brought out in the U.S.
“I do not think it’s a great idea to try and design a world where a few a countries say, ‘Ha ha ha, we’ve won’ and other countries are envious,” he said, adding that the U.S. should be looking to trade with the rest of the world.
Buffett didn’t mention the president by name, but the target of his criticism was clear. Tensions between the U.S. and China remain high, with both sides imposing tariffs on billions of dollars’ worth of goods
“There’s no question that trade, trade can be an act of war,” Buffett said.
Berkshire, in its quarterly earnings release, said,
“Changes in macroeconomic conditions and geopolitical events, including changes in international trade policies and tariffs, may negatively affect our operating results and the values of our investments in equity securities and of our operating businesses.
We are currently unable to reliably predict the nature, timing or magnitude of the potential economic consequences of any such changes or the impacts on our Consolidated Financial Statements.”
The sheer size of Berkshire’s cash pile reflects Buffett’s reluctance to deploy capital in this kind of market.
He told attendees that the holding company wasn’t seeing anything too attractive to invest in right now, saying that while Berkshire would be willing to invest as much as $100 billion under the right conditions, no such opportunities currently meet the company’s threshold for value and risk.

For the sake of your tradition you have made void the word of God. – Jesus
Then Pharisees and scribes came to Jesus from Jerusalem and said,
“Why do your disciples break the tradition of the elders? For they do not wash their hands when they eat.”
He answered them,
“And why do you break the commandment of God for the sake of your tradition? For God commanded, ‘Honor your father and your mother,’ and, ‘Whoever reviles father or mother must surely die.’
But you say, ‘If anyone tells his father or his mother, “What you would have gained from me is given to God,” he need not honor his father.’
So for the sake of your tradition you have made void the word of God.
You hypocrites! Well did Isaiah prophesy of you, when he said:
“‘This people honors me with their lips, but their heart is far from me; in vain do they worship me, teaching as doctrines the commandments of men.’” (Matthew 15:1-9)
Here is a trailer from the 1971 classical film, Fiddler on the Roof.
As you listen to Tevye, the main character in the film, talk about “traditions”, note what he says about the origin of these “traditions.”
Trump Upsets Millions of Catholics Worldwide by Posting AI Image of Himself as Pope

Trump already sees himself as a Jewish King, so why not the Pope too? It’s a perfect illustration of the “Judeo/Christian” values for the U.S., where Trump is the new Messiah/Savior.
Donald Trump received Jesuit training in college. [6]
From The Independent [7]:
President Donald Trump has posted an AI-generated image of himself in papal regalia, just 11 days after Pope Francis’ death.
The image, posted on Truth Social, shows President Trump dressed in white wearing a papal hat, known as a mitre, with a large crucifix hanging around his neck.
It comes after the president joked that he’d like to be the pontiff when asked who he would like to succeed Pope Francis. He said to reporters on the White House lawn: “I’d like to be Pope. That would be my number one choice.”
“Please take this down,” pleaded one social media user. “Many Catholics, myself included, find this as a great disrespect to the past and future leader of our church.”
Another responded: “Trump, as someone outside the U.S., I find your post utterly disrespectful to the Catholic community worldwide. The papacy is a sacred institution for millions, and this mockery is an affront to their beliefs.”
“Completely disrespectful. The Catholic community is mourning and you post this?”
Tech Companies Who Supported Trump Fear Criticizing Him even as Big Tech Faces Huge Losses from Trump’s Policies

After Trump publicly ridiculed Amazon.com this week [9], most other Big Tech companies now fear criticizing him.
From The Information [8]:
On Thursday, Microsoft announced it had jacked up the prices on its game products, raising the price of its flagship Xbox console by $100—or 20%—to $600. It was an extraordinary move: Five-year-old consoles like the current generation of Xboxes almost always see price cuts, not increases.
To anyone even dimly aware of economic news, it was fairly obvious Microsoft’s Xbox changes were a reaction to the Trump administration’s tariffs on electronics manufactured overseas.
But that wasn’t clear from the company’s anodyne explanation for the change, which said the increase was prompted by “market conditions and the rising cost of development.”
More than 100 days into the presidency of Donald Trump, the tech leaders and companies who welcomed his second term don’t seem to have had changes of heart—at least not ones they’ll admit to publicly.
The most full-throated Trump backers in tech still believe he can unleash American dynamism in artificial intelligence, crypto, manufacturing and other areas.
And tech companies like Microsoft are going out of their way to avoid crossing the president by, for example, attributing their price increases to his tariffs.
It’s easy to understand why Microsoft chose not to telegraph the impact of the administration’s tariffs too explicitly to consumers.
Earlier in the week, White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt blasted Amazon for what she called a “a hostile and political act” after Punchbowl News reported that the retailer was considering showing the impact of tariffs on prices on its site.
Amazon subsequently said it had considered such a plan for Haul, an Amazon site that sells inexpensive Chinese-made goods, but dropped the idea before the White House’s response.
When Amazon CEO Andy Jassy addressed Trump’s tariffs on this Thursday evening’s earnings call, it almost sounded like he was discussing a severe weather event rather than a political decision. “It’s hard to tell what’s going to happen with tariffs right now,” Jassy said. “It’s hard to tell where they’re going to settle and when they’re going to settle.”
Big tech companies have much to lose from provoking the president.
Nearly all of them are the subjects of federal antitrust cases or investigations that could force radical changes on them, not to mention regulations that could help or hurt their businesses in AI, cryptocurrency and social media, among many other areas.
And while many of the largest tech companies and its leaders have sought to curry favor with the president—for example, by donating $1 million each to his inauguration—Trump isn’t going to let up on them, said Mike Davis, a pugnacious Trump supporter who runs a right-wing advocacy group, the Article III Project. (Source [8].)
The Retail Apocalypse is Still Coming
Most Americans still have no idea what is coming in the near future. This summer is going to see economic chaos as many things Americans buy will soon disappear or be too expensive to purchase.
I bought a new vacuum cleaner this week before the tariffs kick in.
But the good news is that oil will probably remain low, so at least it won’t cost as much at the pump to drive around to all of these stores with empty shelves trying to find what you need. (sarcasm)
From PC Magazine [10]:
Amazon CEO: This Is Why You’re Not Seeing Higher Prices From Tariffs (Yet)
Excerpts:
If all the tariff talk has been more of an abstract political squabble than a hit to your wallet, Amazon CEO Andy Jassy offered one explanation in the company’s earnings call this week.
Amazon, as well as many of its third-party sellers, intentionally purchased extra inventory in anticipation of the policy change.
Many items on the site today are selling under those pre-tariff prices, but once the inventory runs out, shoppers are out of luck, particularly if US trade talks with China aren’t successful.
“We’ve done some forward buys of inventory where we’re the first-party seller,” Jassy says. “Our third-party sellers have pulled forward a number of items, so they have inventory here as well.”
Amazon is “encouraging” third-party sellers to buy as much inventory at pre-tariff prices to “keep prices as low as possible for customers.”
These tactics mean shoppers haven’t quite felt the sting of price increases.
Consumer spending surged in March while inflation cooled, Reuters reports. However, the US’s gross domestic product (GDP) slowed from 2.4% in Q4 to 0.3% in Q1, almost entirely because of the extra imports to beat Trump’s tariffs, the Associated Press reports.

Big Tech is Continuing to Inflate the AI Bubble, Making the Upcoming AI Crash even Larger
Until Big Tech stocks go through a major correction or blow up completely, the AI bubble will continue to inflate, driven by FEAR of being left behind by the AI spending frenzy.
AI is here to stay, but mega profits from it are not, because most of the investments today are on development for the future, in projects that may never return the profits hoped for.
Fully automated self-driving vehicles have already seen investments of probably over $1 trillion in the past decade, with no real return on profits yet.
The largest automobile manufacturers, such as Ford and Volkswagen, stopped investing in this losing technology over 2 years ago, but Tesla and others continue to waste money it.
The Big Tech Crash is still coming….
From MarketWatch [11]:
Big Tech showed it won’t back down on AI spending. Some on Wall Street are still wary.
Excerpts:
One thing is clear after the latest earnings season: Big Tech plans to plow ahead and deploy massive budgets for artificial-intelligence data-center buildouts.
That’s even as markets have sold off this year on recession fears, adding to the concern from some on Wall Street that companies could be allocating too much to AI given the technology’s scant returns on investment so far.
The fear is that companies may have to cut back if the economy goes into a recession. That would presumably affect chip makers like Nvidia Corp. and other hardware companies that have benefitted from the spending boom.
So far, though, Big Tech isn’t backing down. Capital-expenditure growth spending from U.S. hyperscalers accelerated to 71% in the first quarter, with about $81 billion in spending, according to Evercore ISI analysts. (Source [11].)
Saudi Arabia Tells Trump NOT to Talk About Israel in Upcoming Visit

Saudi Arabia’s King Salman has appointed his son, Mohammed bin Salman, as crown prince, replacing his nephew, Mohammed bin Nayef, as first in line to the throne. Image Source [12].
As during his first term, Trump will make his first diplomatic visit outside the U.S. as President to Saudi Arabia. (He did visit Rome for the Pope’s funeral last week.)
And for good reason. The U.S. needs Saudi Arabia to continue putting pressure on the Houthis in Yemen, and Saudi Arabia controls OPEC, which is threatening to increase production to further decrease the price of oil in the U.S., which at present is below $60 a barrel, the minimum that is needed for Big Oil to remain profitable.
By telling Trump ahead of time NOT to bring up Israel, it would seem Trump’s “Abraham Accords” is dead in the water.
I lived in Saudi Arabia for a few years in the 1990s as an English professor, and I can verify that when Mohammed bin Salman said he would be assassinated if he stopped supporting a two-state solution for Palestine, he is not lying.
He is the biggest political whore in the Middle East, raking in $billions from the U.S. and supporting their genocide in Palestine, while publicly condemning it.
From Middle East Eye [13]:
Saudi Arabia told US to keep Israel normalisation off agenda for Trump’s visit, sources say
Excerpts:
Saudi Arabia has set a ground rule for US President Donald Trump and his entourage ahead of their visit to the kingdom in May: keep talk of normalisation with Israel off the agenda.
That was the message delivered by Saudi Foreign Minister Prince Faisal bin Farhan al-Saud during his visit to Washington DC last month to plan Trump’s visit to the kingdom and in follow-up discussions among senior officials, two Arab officials familiar with the talks told Middle East Eye.
While it’s common for diplomats to hash out the list of items to be discussed before a head of state’s visit, the Saudi request underscores the kingdom’s fear that Trump’s shoot-from-the-hip style could create an awkward moment on camera for Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman.
The crown prince has publicly accused Israel of committing genocide in Gaza, tapping into his people’s anger over Israel’s assault on the enclave, where over 52,000 people have been killed, mostly women and children, according to Palestinian officials.
“Saudi Arabia is serious not to be tricked into anything that regards Israel during the upcoming visit. It was made clear in DC,” one Arab official told MEE.
Prince Farhan met US Secretary of State Marco Rubio at the State Department on 9 April. The meeting was public, but Saudi Arabia setting out ground rules to dissuade discussions on normalisation ahead of Trump’s visit has not been previously reported.
Farhan told officials afterwards that Rubio and his department had been completely “sidelined” from decision-making by Trump.
On Thursday, Rubio was appointed “interim” national security advisor, while retaining his role as top diplomat, following Trump’s ousting of Mike Waltz. Both Rubio and Waltz have been targeted by “America First” Trump loyalists.
Trump has publicly backed Israel’s decision to pull out of a January ceasefire and return to war in Gaza.
However, ahead of his visit to the Gulf, he has altered his tone somewhat.
“We’ve got to be good to Gaza … These people are suffering,” Trump said he told Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu last week.
On Thursday, State Department spokeswoman Tammy Bruce said, “we want aid to resume” when asked about Gaza.
Saudi Arabia was the first country Trump visited as president in 2017.
The two Arab officials told MEE that the risks for Saudi Arabia were higher on this trip, given Israel’s war on Gaza. Riyadh feels the need to carefully manage the itinerary down to the technical level, the officials said.
“There will be no surprises or unexpected requests in public or private,” the second Arab official told MEE.
Saudi Arabia has sought to manage Trump’s visit by focusing on three files, the sources said: military deals, the Iranian nuclear programme, and the economy.

Trump Requests Record $1.01 Trillion for National Defense for FY2026
Now we can see the real purpose of DOGE and other government cuts in spending, which is to boost our military budget to keep funding Israel (and probably Ukraine now).
Trump is following the same path as previous dying empires, which is to over-spend on wars. This was the primary reason of the fall of the Soviet Union in the 1990s, for example.
From Sputnik [14]:
US President Donald Trump has proposed a historic $1.01 trillion budget for national defense for fiscal year 2026, representing a 13% increase from the current year’s $883.7 billion, according to a document released by the Office of Management and Budget (OMB) on Friday.
“For Defense spending, the President proposes an increase of 13 percent to $1.01 trillion for FY 2026,” OMB director Russell Vought said in a letter to Senate Committee on Appropriations chair Susan Collins. (Source [14].)
Foreclosures are on the rise, and 60,000 veterans are suddenly much closer to losing their homes
The veterans always get the short end of the stick in this country, don’t they?
So while they want $billions for the military, at the same time they are cutting programs that helped veterans, such as the federal foreclosure-assistance program for veterans.
From MarketWatch [15]:
Foreclosures are rising as more homeowners miss multiple mortgage payments — and with the end of a federal foreclosure-assistance program for veterans and service members this week, homeowners who have served in the military in particular face a sudden and acute risk of losing their homes.
Home buyers, sellers and owners are navigating a challenging economic environment. Mortgage rates remain high, making it expensive to buy. Increasing inventory has made buyers more selective, making it difficult for owners to sell. And homeowners are struggling with the rising costs of insurance and property taxes.
Now, increasingly, homeowners are also finding it difficult to make their monthly mortgage payment.
More homeowners had missed multiple mortgage payments as of March, newly released data show. The share of mortgages that were seriously delinquent — a status that typically means a homeowner hasn’t made a payment for 90 days or more — rose 14% year over year in March, according to data from Intercontinental Exchange. Foster Care Does More Harm Than Good, But No Harm Can Change Me
Written by a former Foster Care prisoner who was locked away in psych wards, and who is now an adult. HHS refuses to stop funding for Foster Care, as I wrote yesterday [16].
Without that funding, this story would never have happened, nor would thousands of others just like it.
From The Imprint [17]:
When I was about 10 years old, I went to foster care because my mom died, and my dad was far away. When I was with my dad, I went to school and became number one in my first-grade class. After my dad found out that I was number one in class, he put me in a private Catholic school.
When I went to foster care, a foster care worker falsely labeled me as some kid who was mentally disabled and sent me to be locked up in a mental facility. While in the mental institution, I was not allowed to go to school or question anything.
If I asked why I was in a mental facility when I did not have a mental illness, and why I was not allowed to be in school, they would throw me on the ground, restrain me, and stick me with needles that had drugs in them to sedate me.
This is inhumane. This type of treatment is slavery. One can tell that these are exactly some of the ways that our ancestors were treated in the historical slavery days.
Preventing humans from getting an education and the freedom to come and go as they please is slavery, which violates the Thirteenth Amendment. When I was punished for asking questions in foster care, I remember saying to myself that this was a violation of my freedom of speech.
Foster care does more harm than good, but no harm can change me. After being locked up in those mental facilities, prevented from going to school like a slave for a long time, and subjected to severe abuse, I finally left foster care.
I went to a regular community and was identified and recommended to be put into the highly gifted magnet program at North Hollywood High School in California. I took lots of college classes, including AP classes while still in high school. I graduated high school summa cum laude with a 4.06 GPA.

Trump-appointed federal judge rejects use of Alien Enemies Act in Venezuelan deportations
Remember, the last time this Alien Enemies Act was used in the United States was during WW II where Japanese Americans were rounded up and confined in concentration camps here in the U.S.
From NBC News [18]:
A federal judge appointed by President Donald Trump on Thursday rejected the Trump administration’s invocation of the Alien Enemies Act of 1798 to deport Venezuelans it alleges are members of the criminal organization Tren de Aragua.
U.S. District Judge Fernando Rodriguez Jr., of the Southern District of Texas, wrote in an opinion that he does not question the executive branch’s authority to direct the detention and removal of aliens who engage in criminal activity, and he noted the administration can continue to rely on the Immigration and Nationality Act for those proceedings.
But Rodriguez, who was nominated in Trump’s first term, wrote that the question at the center of the lawsuit was whether Trump could use the Alien Enemies Act to detain and remove Venezuelans who were members of Tren de Aragua, and he argued that “the historical record renders clear that the President’s invocation of the AEA through the Proclamation exceeds the scope of the statute and is contrary to the plain, ordinary meaning of the statute’s terms.”
The Supreme Court had put a pause on deportations under the Alien Enemies Act at a time when buses with Venezuelans were headed to an airport from a detention center in the Northern District of Texas. Some of those on the bus said they were told they were destined for a prison in El Salvador, while others were told they were headed to Venezuela, according to the wife of one of the detainees and two lawyers representing other detainees at the facility.
Until Trump invoked it this year, the Alien Enemies Act was only invoked during the War of 1812, World War I and World War II. Trump, in a proclamation on March 15, declared that Tren de Aragua was a designated terrorist organization that was “perpetuating, attempting, and threatening an invasion or predatory incursion against the territory of the United States.”
Rodriguez wrote in his 36-page opinion that the Trump administration’s use of “invasion” does not match the historical use of the term, which has typically been used in connection with military endeavors or warfare.
The court found that an “invasion” or “predatory incursion” must be “an organized, armed force entering the United States to engage in conduct destructive of property and human life in a specific geographical area” but that “need not be a precursor to actual war.”
In a final judgment and permanent injunction, Rodriguez wrote that the administration was permanently enjoined from using the Alien Enemies Act to deport, transfer or remove the plaintiffs and other members of the class, but wrote that they were not prohibited from “proceeding with removal proceedings or otherwise acting” based on the Immigration and Nationality Act. McDonald’s store traffic falls unexpectedly as diners grow uneasy about economy
From the Associated Press [19]:
McDonald’s store traffic fell further than expected in the first quarter as economic uncertainty weighed on diners.
The trouble was particularly acute in the U.S., where same-store sales — or sales at locations open at least a year — slumped 3.6%. That was the biggest U.S. decline McDonald’s has seen since 2020, when a pandemic shuttered stores and restaurants and other public spaces nationwide.
McDonald’s Chairman and CEO Chris Kempczinski said lower- and middle-income consumers, worried about inflation and the economic outlook, cut back on fast food during the January-March period.
Industrywide traffic from consumers making $45,000 per year or less was down by double-digit percentages, he said, and traffic from middle-income consumers was down nearly as much. Only traffic from those making $100,000 or more remained solid, he said. (Source [19].)

Building the Standing Army: Trump’s New Order Hands Military Power to Local Cops

Image source [21]. (Appears to be AI generated)
Getting ready for Civil War!
From Free Thought Project [21]:
On April 28, 2025, President Donald Trump signed an executive order titled “Strengthening and Unleashing America’s Law Enforcement to Pursue Criminals and Protect Innocent Citizens.”
This directive significantly expands the federal government’s role in local policing, blurring the lines between civilian law enforcement and military operations.
It authorizes the transfer of excess military equipment to local police departments, increases federal funding for law enforcement, and provides legal protections for officers accused of misconduct.
Critics argue that this move accelerates the militarization of the police and undermines civil liberties.
The executive order mandates the Attorney General and the Secretary of Defense to “increase the provision of excess military and national security assets in local jurisdictions to assist State and local law enforcement.”
This includes military-grade weapons, vehicles, and surveillance equipment, effectively turning local police forces into paramilitary units. Such measures raise concerns about the erosion of the Posse Comitatus Act, which prohibits the use of the military for domestic law enforcement. (Read the full article [21].)
Israel is starving Gaza to death, and still the world does nothing

From Middle East Eye [22]:
Israel is starving the entire population of Gaza – to the point of death, for a growing number of Palestinians.
There is not a single place in the world where starvation is an inevitability: not after major environmental disasters, amid drought and crop failure, or during armed conflict and genocide. Starvation is an act of either intentional violence or indifferent neglect, both of which are made possible by our collective inaction.
Nowhere is this more evident than in Gaza, where Israel’s occupation, blockade and now-total siege were designed to exert full control over the Palestinian population, deliberately depriving them of the most basic means to sustain life.
Starvation is a strategy as old as warfare itself. It is deployed as a weapon of mass destruction to inflict maximal harm, and always with calculated disregard for those who suffer and die as a result.
So horrific is this particular form of violence that it is distinguished as a specific war crime in the Geneva Conventions and the Rome Statute of the International Criminal Court. In addition, UN Resolution 2417 condemns both the “starvation of civilians as a method of warfare” and the practice of “depriving civilians of objects indispensable to their survival”. (Source [22].)
Abbott Vows To Withhold State Funding From Texas City For Its Opposition To Israel

From ZeroHedge News [24]:
The response of Governor Greg Abbott to a resolution undertaken by the city council of San Marcos, Texas erases any doubt over where the true loyalty of America’s political class lies in the dynamic of weighing the interests of Israel against those of citizens the United States.
During the April 15th San Marcos City Council meeting, an agenda item dedicated to “a possible resolution calling for the immediate and permanent ceasefire in occupied Palestine” took center stage during public comments.
The proposed resolution elicited an immersive discussion between proponents and opponents of the measure calling for the city of San Marcos to take an official position against the war in Gaza in a manner that embodied the American ethos rooted in the principles of freedom of speech and peaceful assembly.
However, the response from the State Of Texas proved to be antithetical to that embodiment of America as Governor Greg Abbott’s office quickly condemned the proposed resolution.
In response to the City Council Of San Marcos’ decision to schedule an official vote on the resolution at its next meeting on May 6th, Governor Abbott indicated that the adoption of measure would be in violation of Texas law, which would lead to the termination of all active state grants to the city and the withholding of any future state funding. Trump Admits that He is Defying the Supreme Court to Return Man Wrongly Deported to El Salvador
From The New York Times [25]:
Trump Says He Could Free Abrego Garcia From El Salvador, but Won’t
Excerpts:
President Trump, whose administration has insisted it could not bring Kilmar Armando Abrego Garcia back from El Salvador to the United States, said he does have the ability to help return the wrongly deported Maryland man, but is not willing to do so because he believes he is a gang member.
Mr. Trump’s comments not only undermined previous statements by his top aides, but were a blunt sign of his administration’s intention to double down and defy the courts.
Before the interview with ABC News, the administration had dug in on its refusal to heed the Supreme Court order to help return Mr. Abrego Garcia, who is a Salvadoran migrant. Trump officials have said that because he was now in a Salvadoran prison, it was up to the Salvadoran government to release him. (Source [25].)
Columbia student activist rebukes Trump after release from ICE detention: ‘I’m not afraid of you’
A Vermont judge has released Mohsen Mahdawi, a Columbia University student who is a legal resident Green Card holder for 10 years and was seized by ICE officers when he showed up for his interview to become a U.S. citizen.
The judge was able to rule on a habeas corpus petition from his attorneys because Mahdawi was NOT rushed to Louisiana and put into a concentration camp there.
According to one report on Politico:
Mahdawi said that when he was arrested earlier this month, he was immediately driven to the airport to be sent to an out-of-state holding facility — but missed the flight by nine minutes.
So that gave time to his attorneys to get an order that he not be removed from Vermont.
No charges have been filed against him. He is now free on bail while his trial proceeds, because the judge ruled that he was not a flight risk nor a risk to society.
From the Independent (via Yahoo) [26]:
A Columbia University student who was arrested at his citizenship interview and hauled off in handcuffs had some words for Donald Trump’s administration after a federal judge in Vermont ordered his immediate release.
Mohsen Mahdawi, holding up two “peace” signs, was greeted by cheering supporters as he walked out of the courthouse Wednesday.
“To President Trump and his cabinet,” he said. “I am not afraid of you.”
On Wednesday, District Judge Geoffrey Crawford determined that Mahdawi, who hasn’t been charged with any crime, can be released on bail while his legal challenges continue.
Mahdawi — who was born and raised in a refugee camp in the West Bank, where he lived until moving to the United States in 2014 — is among dozens of student activists marked for removal by the Trump administration over campus protests against Israel’s war in Gaza.
He is among the first of those activists to successfully secure his release while challenging the constitutionality of his arrest and detention in federal court as well as a parallel case in immigration court.
That same Vermont court is also presiding over the case of Rumeysa Ozturk, a Turkish doctoral student at Tufts University who remains in a Louisiana detention center.
“This is what justice is. And for anybody who’s doubting justice, this is a light of hope, a hope and faith in the justice system in America,” Mahdawi said outside the courthouse.
“We are pro-peace and anti-war,” he added. “To my people in Palestine: I feel your pain, I see your suffering, and I see freedom and it is very very soon.”
Attorneys argue his arrest and detention is retaliatory and in violation of his First Amendment rights, “indisputably and solely for engaging in lawful, constitutionally protected speech,” ACLU of Vermont legal director Lia Ernst told reporters Tuesday night.
“Look at this record we have amassed and look at the mere absence of record [from] the government,” she added.
“His detention is part and parcel of the Trump administration’s attempt to condition liberty on political views,” according to Shezza Abboushi Dallal, a staff attorney at the Creating Law Enforcement Accountability & Responsibility (CLEAR) Project, among the groups defending Mahdawi.
In a filmed interview with Vermont Democratic Senator Peter Welch inside an ICE detention center last week, Mahdawi said Rubio’s invocation of a rarely used provision of the Immigration and Nationality Act to target people who are perceived as threats to foreign policy is conflating “being anti-war as antisemitic.”
“How could that be possible when my partners, most of my partners at Columbia’s campus, and beyond, are Jews and Israelis? My work has been centered on peacemaking,” he said.
“My hope and my dream is … to see an end to the war, an end to the killing, and to see a peaceful resolution between Palestinians and Israelis.
How could this be a threat to anybody except the war machine that is feeding this?”

Columbia University student Mohsen Mahdawi says his arrest should be “a red flag” to Americans who value their freedom as much as he does in first interview since being arrested
This is the man who has lived in the U.S. for 10 years and was here legally as a Permanent Resident and was on his way to become a U.S. Citizen when he was seized by masked ICE agents and detained.

Detained Columbia student: US ‘first place I have experienced’ freedom
Excerpts:
Columbia University student and Palestinian activist Mohsen Mahdawi, who was detained by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) during what was supposed to be a naturalization interview, says his arrest should be “a red flag” to Americans who value their freedom as much as he does.
“Before coming to this country, freedom was just a concept. But the actual experience of freedom of movement to travel among 50 states, freedom to breathe the breeze of the ocean, and to feel your toes in the sand.
This is the first place I have experienced this freedom of speech where I will not be actually retaliated against or punished for saying my mind,” Mahdawi told NPR’s “Morning Edition” in the first full interview of a detained international student under President Trump’s crackdown.
Mahdawi, a green-card holder currently being held in the Northwest State Correctional Facility in St. Albans, Vt., was looking to become a citizen after living in the U.S. for 10 years.
“When I get the appointment the first thing was uh… is this a trap or is it legit? And I realized directly that I am dealing with two extreme opposite poles. One is becoming a citizen with full rights, and the other one is being detained and having no rights,” he said.
“I see the risk, I see the opportunity, and I want the American people to see this, too. To see this level of injustice. That I am doing everything legally, that I have prepared and studied for the Constitution and that I went willingly and respected the law, did everything the way how it’s supposed to be done.” (Source [27].)
